We have made a video summary of the campaign:

This year 2017 has been full of reasons to smile. At AlterNative3 we are 25 years old. 25 years of working to make the world a fairer, more sustainable and healthier place.

To celebrate, we set out to make this 2017 a year full of smiles. By attending trade fairs and activities, running projects around the world and competitions, we have sought to brighten up the day, the month or the year for all those who follow and live a healthy, ecological and, above all, ecological lifestyle, fighting for Fairer Trade.

Fairs and activities:

During the last 12 months we have attended 9 trade fairs:

2018 calendars
Calendario «Sonríe» 2018

Throughout this year we have organised a competition, Smile AlterNativa3with which we have tried to fill the networks with smiles and reasons to smile. After lots and lots of pictures and happiness we chose 12 from among a representative of AlterNativa3, the state Fair Trade coordinatora representative of Terrassa Channel and another of Project Factory. You can find these 12 winning smiles in our beautiful calendar, to bring colour and joy to 2018!

25 years of Fairtrade deserve a celebration! And so we decided to hold a draw for a whole year of Fairtrade products for the winner. After many participations, on Tuesday 19th December we made the draw and announced the winner, Mayte Bartual!

Finally, to close the activities carried out this year, to mention the product raffles we hold after each fair. To thank all those who visited us and took the time to learn a little about what we do and how we promote and work to make the world a fairer place.

What is the balance of your year?

On the 10th of December we celebrate Human Rights Day. There are many of us who are still convinced that each one of us, everywhere, at all times is entitled to all human rights that belong equally to each of us and unite us as a global community with the same human rights ideals and values.

Let us use this day to reflect on the impact of our purchases. Behind an everyday act such as having a coffee or buying a product, there hides a election who is committed to one model of society or another. AlterNativa3 works with the aim of offering a sustainable, responsible and quality alternative to everyday consumer products. That's why its products are organic and fair trade, because Fair Trade guarantees that the products have been cultivated with respect for the rights of the producers.

At this time of year it is very important that we are aware of the power we have as consumers. Consuming Fair Trade products we participate in building a fairer society based on respect for people and the environment.

Celebrate Human Rights Day by being part of the solution to the problem, choose gifts Fair Trade.

The project

Months after the shipment of books from the enLibrate project, we have received fresh news from the San José de Nica School.

ragua. This school is one of the 9 beneficiaries of the project "El Rincón de la Lectura" promoted by our friends of Alternativa 3 and the Augusto Cesar Sandino Cooperative of Nicaragua, and is within the framework of the EnLibrate project of Fundación Logística Justa and Fundación SEUR, with the collaboration of Fundación CARES and the Town Council of

libraries

Terrassa.

San José is a rural region located in the tropical mountains of Nicaragua's interior. To reach this area, you have to drive several hours through the roads of Guapotal until you reach the narrow path that leads you to the small community.

Following the shipment of books and furniture in 2016, a small children's library was created so that children from the community could enjoy the pleasure of reading. Today, a year after the solidarity shipment, Pablo tells us how things are going there.

How does a library help the community?

Pablo is the teacher in charge of the school. He is 23 years old and is a native of San José. Thanks to his efforts and the scholarship programme promoted by Alternativa 3 and the Augusto Cesar Sandino Cooperative, he became the community's teacher. The school where Pablo works is a primary school that receives 54 students, some of whom come from more distant villages, and every day they walk for miles in order to receive an education.

Pablo explains with joy and excitement that the creation of the library has been a revolution in the community, both among the children and for the rest of the family, since until then, only study books had arrived in the area and there were almost no textbooks to read. The library itself has set up a lending system so that children can take books home after school to read and enjoy them with their parents, aunts and uncles, grandmothers and grandfathers and the rest of the family. He tells us how every day he spends some time in class asking about the experiences the pupils are having: what the stories in the books are about, who they have been reading the books with and what sensations they have been able to create in them. Pablo tells us that every day they tell different stories from the fantastic world of books, and that the social project has undoubtedly served to promote reading among all the inhabitants of San José.

AlterNative3 is participating this September in two trade fairs in the organic food sector: Natura Salud in Tenerife (Canary Islands) and BioCultura Valencia.

NATURA SALUD: the largest fair dedicated to the health and healthy living sector in the Canary Islands.

This is the second edition of Natura Health in which AlterNativa3 participates; after our good experience in the last edition of the fair, we will be at the booth 319 from 22nd to 24th September in the Gran Nave of the Tenerife Exhibition Centre.
NATURA HEALTH was born with the main objective of creating a biennial meeting point between the supply and demand for services and products related to health and quality of lifeNATURA SALUD, and over the course of its nine previous editions, has confirmed that it is not only a must-attend event for professionals in the sector, but has also become a meeting place for the general public to purchase natural products, find out about what is on offer and discover a healthier way of life. As already known from previous editions, the NATURA SALUD offer goes far beyond a mere commercial event. Two conference rooms, a fully-equipped kitchen and an area to offer visitors talks, lectures, exhibitions, cooking workshops, master classes, concerts and other activities on topics related to healthy living and holistic health.

BioCultura Valencia: International Fair of Organic Products and Responsible Consumption.

AlterNative3 has been involved since its inception in BioCultura Valencia. In this edition we share stand with Totecológic, our partner in the Levante area. You will find us in the stand 45 on 29, 30 September and 1 October at the Valencia exhibition centre.

BioCultura, the most important fair for organic products and responsible consumption in Spain, is expecting more than 200 exhibitors and 12,000 visitors for its 7th edition in Valencia. More than 5,000 organic food products make up the largest sector of the fair, along with other sectors such as hygiene and cosmetics products with certified ingredients; organic textiles; eco-materials, furniture and home decoration; renewable energies; complementary therapies and medicines; savings and recycling; ecology; environment; rural tourism and rest homes; toys; handicrafts; music; books and magazines.

DRAWING

As in all the fairs in which we participate, we like to surprise our customers with a special detail, so all purchases made at our stand will participate in the draw for a pack of organic products AlterNativa3.
We are waiting for you!

This year's slogan for the celebration of World Environment Day "Connecting people with nature" fits perfectly with the essence of our cooperative AlterNativa3: dedicated to the production of organic fair trade products with the aim of offering sustainable, responsible and quality alternatives to everyday consumer products, especially coffee, cocoa and cane sugar. Products that respect people and nature.

"Connecting people with nature".

Each year, World Environment Day is organised around a theme and serves to focus attention on a particular pressing issue. The 2017 theme focuses on people's connection to nature, encouraging us to get outdoors and into nature to appreciate its beauty and reflect on how we are an integral part of it and how much we depend on it.

The reality of small commercial producer organisations is the reality of billions of rural dwellers around the world who spend their daily lives "in connection with nature" and are fully aware that they depend on natural water supplies and on nature to provide them with their livelihoods through soil fertility. These people are the first to suffer from the threats that ecosystems face, be it pollution, climate change or overexploitation. This awareness means that the small cooperatives of fair trade producers maintain traditional farming techniques while avoiding damage to the environment as much as possible.

This is why one of the basic principles of fair trade is respect for the environment; a reduced and safe use of agrochemicals, appropriate and safe waste management, maintenance of soil fertility and water resources, and the non-use of genetically modified organisms.

In October 2015 a new Fairtrade Climate Standard, with the aim of supporting producers in adapting to climate change and reducing their carbon emissions.recognising, on the one hand, the devastating impacts of climate change on the most vulnerable populations in developing countries and, on the other hand, the need to develop more sustainable forms of production in the face of increasing depletion of natural resources.

This year 2017 is a very special year for AlterNativa3, since celebrating 25 years. For twenty-five years we have been offering fair trade organic products, creating opportunities for producers and promoting trade based on respect for people and the environment. That's why we invite you to participate in our photo contest!

All of us are the energy that moves the world and we have the power to improve it, it is in our hands to achieve a better world. To celebrate our 25th anniversary we want to carry out small actions that contribute to make a better and happier environment, that's why we have created the contest #SonrieAlterNativa3with which we want to fill the social networks with reasons to smile. Participating is very easy, all you have to do is upload a photo on your social networks, Facebook or Instagram, of a happy moment and tell us your reason to smile with the hashtag #SonrieAlternativa3.

We are waiting for you!

Our colleague Estel Malgosa has had the opportunity to attend a meeting of students who have been awarded scholarships for the 2017 academic year by the Cooperativa Multisectorial Augusto César Sandino. The scholarship project is a project that the Cooperative is carrying out with the support of AlterNativa3 and Terrassa City Council. It aims to provide aid to students from the communities to help young people access secondary school and university studies.

El Guapotal is a mountainous region made up of 7 rural communities belonging to the municipality of Tuma-La Dalia. The inhabitants of the region have scarce resources and live from agriculture, especially coffee cultivation. Augusto César Sandino is a cooperative formed by 85 families of small producers who produce Fair Trade coffee.

Due to the difficulty of access to the communities, students in the area have fewer opportunities to continue their studies after primary school. The scholarship provides them with a small grant to help them pay for transport and meals during the long journeys to the schools. Many of the young people who study do so at the weekend, thus being able to combine studies and work, sleeping in the city only one or two nights a week. This year there are 11 scholarship holders, between secondary school and university studies. Among the most popular university studies are agricultural production engineering and accountancy.

In return for the scholarship, the young people carry out a few hours of work in the community, through which they are initiated to participate in the social activities carried out by the cooperative and a link is created that will allow the generational relay, avoiding the migration of young people in the cities and in other countries. In this way, the experienced students become producers and return to the cooperative to train the members in crop improvement, crop diversification, environmental conservation and climate change prevention, gender equality awareness, etc. This is the case of Margini and Fairi, who have joined the cooperative's social projects after several years as scholarship holders.

This year there are many new students, full of dreams and hopes for their studies. One of this year's novelties is that the Cooperative has donated a piece of land where the students of agriculture and agronomy can do their internships, and those studying economics can practice with budgets and crop finances. The land has half a hectare of coffee and cocoa plantations, which the young scholarship holders will cultivate. The profit from the sale of these products will be added to next year's scholarship money, thus aiming at the future sustainability and autonomy of the project.

Since 2009 Alternativa3, with the support of Terrassa City Council, has been carrying out a project that consists of giving scholarships to young people (50% men and 50% women), with a total of more than 238 scholarship holders, to increase literacy in the communities and to ensure that in the future, thanks to this training, there will be qualified workers for productive, educational and cultural activities.

Nicaragua is the second poorest country in Latin America and one of the most food insecure countries in the world. 46.2% of the population lives in poverty, 11.2% lives in extreme poverty, a percentage that increases in rural areas (according to data from the UNDP's 2011 Human Development Index).

CECOCAFEN's BECAS programme was born as a result of a diagnosis carried out on the educational levels in the area. The result indicated that the average level of schooling is second grade of primary school for 60% of those surveyed, and the remaining 40% could neither read nor write. It concluded with a negative development index.

Students cannot afford the cost of continuing their education after primary school. Technical and secondary schools are located in the cities, far from the homes of the rural population. The cost of tuition, travel and living expenses are beyond their financial means.

The criteria for awarding grants are as follows:

- The economic situation of the family.

- The number of children studying in the family.

- Scholarship one student per family per year.

- The geographical location of the pupil.

- Academic performance record is taken into account

The problem it addresses is that young people drop out of school because of lack of resources.
