It has been hard work, but it was totally worth it. Finally, we can show you our new range of specialty coffee , in which we have invested all the time, love and passion in the world. We are positive you will enjoy it as much as we have, finding the perfect combination so that each cup is a unique experience, while supporting fair and sustainable trade.

What is specialty coffee?

You’ve probably heard about specialty coffee, but it’s also likely that you don’t know what it is exactly. You assume that it is better than the one that is usually marketed and catches your attention more, but you do not have the keys to choose it over the others. Don’t worry, it’s normal, and that’s why in this post we try to shed some light to help you get to know it better.

The Specialty Coffee Association definition

Based the more theoretical part, we draw on the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), an association that aims to foster global coffee communities that support activities to make coffee a more sustainable, equitable and prosperous activity for the entire value chain.
This association has established the parameters to determine whether a coffee can be considered specialty or not. These combine quality standards in which the coffee must receive a score of at least 80 out of 100, and the need for the process from harvesting until the coffee is served in the cup meet specific characteristics.

Coffees that are committed to sustainability and that you will enjoy with all 5 senses

You can see that labeling as “specialty coffee” is not easy, but at AlterNativa3 we have always opted for top quality products that, at the same time, take care of the environment.
And, if coffee is as essential to you as it is to us, and you enjoy it in the same way, believe us when we tell you that these are really worth it. Its color, its smell, its texture, its flavor… will make you travel to different parts of the world from the moment you open the package until you take the last sip. With the added bonus of knowing that by consuming them you are contributing to fair and sustainable trade.

Discover our new specialty coffee

We have strived for this new range of specialty coffees. In addition to all the external requirements that we had to meet, our own standards entail that each of our products have to be top quality ones. But we did it, and we couldn’t be happier to share it with you.

Four varieties of coffee, four origins and destinations

So that you too can really enjoy good coffee; so that, in addition, you know that by doing so you are adding to the planet; so that you can be part of this project, of this family, that shares passion, not only for the product, but also for the process. So that you take care of yourself knowing that you are also taking care of the other people. So that you stop your day-to-day life and in that moment you take a break, you give yourself the pleasure of enjoying what you really like.
Our range consists of four types of coffee, all of them available in bean and ground formats. Each one of them will make you travel to a different part of the world, with aromas and flavors that will awaken all your senses.

Ethiopia Sidamo single-origin coffee

Coffee from Sidamo, Ethiopia, is a coffee with light acidity and a notable, fruity aroma. With an intense flavor with floral notes of jasmine and bergamot, it will make you travel to the cradle of coffee and, specifically, to Sidamo, an area with abundant rain, optimal temperatures and fertile soil.

Both thebeans format and theground formathave a medium-low roast and an SCA score of 85.

Sumatra Raja Gayo single-origin coffee

Raja Gayo is a mountainous area, at 1,200 meters above sea level, in the north of the island of Sumatra. It is characterized by having high altitude coffee, always planted in the shade, interspersed between fruit trees, which are mainly organic.

Our Sumatra Raja Gayo coffee has a luxurious entry into the mouth with a velvety body and aroma of spices, tobacco and noble woods. Its acidity is pronounced and it has a long aftertaste.

Both the beans format and the ground format have a medium-low roast and an SCA score of 84.

Colombia Cauca single-origin coffee

Colombia Cauca coffee is an intensely fragrant coffee, with notes of tropical fruits and red fruits. It maintains an outstanding balance between its sumptuousness in the mouth and its aroma. It comes from Cauca, the leading Colombian department in the production of high-quality coffees.
Both the beans format and the ground format have a medium-low roast and an SCA score of 83.

Brazil Santos single-origin coffee

Brazil is the largest coffee producer in the world. The most appreciated variety of Arabica grown there is the “Santos”, with soft characteristics, exquisite flavor, fine quality and creamy appearance. It is known by the name Santos, since this high-quality coffee, grown in Minas Gerais, is shipped through the port of Santos.
Our Brazil Santos coffee has outstanding sweetness, medium acidity and caramel flavor. With a silky and broad palate, with a pronounced aftertaste.

Both the beans format and the ground format have a medium-low roast and an SCA score of 81.

We have created a video to summarise the campaign:

Along this school year we are starting the Xarxa Escoles pel Comerç Just project at six different schools in Catalonia.

The Project, which is financed by Agència Catalana de Cooperació pel Desenvolupament and Diputació de Barcelona, is coordinated by AlterNativa3. SETEM Catalunya, the musician Carles Cuberes and the Colectivo de Mujeres de Matagalpa (Nicaragua) are collaborating, too.

Xarxa Escoles pel Comerç Just is an Education for Sustainable Development Project. Its aims are the introduction of the main Fairtrade and Responsible Consumption principles and values in the school curriculum. It pretends to foster more critical attitudes towards the conventional consumption and also to be forces for change towards a sustainable economy. It also pretends to promote the thought about the product origins, who produces them, what are the conditions, what is the salary received and, finally, if there is a more ethic and sustainable option.
the project is focused on different activities to work Fairtrade in the school, involving the whole education community. By this way, it suggests teachers trainings, different educational activities for students, Fairtrade integration in all directions, cultural exchanges with Nicaraguan rural schools and, finally, activities for the families.

The school year 2017-2018 starts with the participation of six different schools: Escola Montnegre, located in la Batlloria; three different rural schools from Baix Montseny (Escola Pont Trencat, Escola Alzinar de Campins and Escola Puig Draude, in Montseny); Institut Emperador Carles in Barcelona and Escola d’Hosteleria Torre Mossèn Homs, from Institut Cavall Bernat in Terrassa.
